23/2021: Leaflet Analysis

Career Insight’s Leaflet on “Sport & fitness sector” is an information leaflet that explains careers related to sport and fitness. Firstly, the purpose of this leaflet was to introduce the other careers in the sport and fitness sector, which is not just a professional athlete or a PE teacher. This can be simply seen in the infographic aids showing all of the facts about what big opportunities people can earn from sport and fitness careers. It also lists the choice and a brief description of the careers people can choose to do. Secondly,  the intended audience is anyone interested in the world of sport.  This can be certainly seen in the graphic boxes that provide persuasive messages for people to join this sector.  Finally, based on the information given, I believe that this leaflet will attract sports and fitness lovers entering into this career. This will now be discussed.

The writer from Career Insight employed various techniques to engage and persuade the audience to read. Firstly, I found almost all of the Persuasive techniques.  This technique immediately engages the audience.

For “A” or alliteration means to use words that start with the repeated 3 same letters and in order. For example, the part called “Get qualified” has a sub-heading of “Apprenticeship, Advanced Apprenticeship, and A levels.  The reader can remember the basic requirements easily if they appreciate a sports career because it will be important if they want to apply this career path.

For “F” or Facts mean that the writer explains facts in the leaflet to inform the readers. For example, “Salaries start at around £12,000 and can rise to £25,000 with experience and qualifications. Senior staff could earn more than £30,000”.  As a result, it motivates the reader on how athletes will earn attractive salaries by experience and qualification of a sports career.

For “R and E” or rhetorical question and emotive language means the question that hooks the reader’s emotive attention. For example, “Don't want to be stuck behind a desk? Get paid to enjoy your hobbies.” and “Love sport?  You  could  make a  career  out  of  it.” The reader will feel alert and pay attention to the leaflet rather than just reading through it and some of them might be interested to attend after reading these 2 questions because the reader will awake and move on from his/her existing life to join this career.

For “S” or Statistic means the information or facts that come in a percentage. For example, “58% of the workforce in this sector is female” This offers the female audience more confidence to enter into this career sector.

Secondly, the leaflet also attracted the audience by using Print features, Organizational features, Illustrations, Graphic Aids, and Persuasive Language techniques.

Print features mean how the writer decides to organize all text to entertain the audience. The feature I found in the preface. For example, “Many people think the only way you can get a career in sport is to become a professional athlete or a PE teacher – but this couldn’t be further from the truth. There are loads of careers in this sector, especially in this Olympic year!”  This provides the general idea of a new perspective about this career.

Organizational features mean how the writer decides to use fonts to help persuade the audience. The feature I found is color print. For example, the writer uses 3 color techniques which are orange, black, and whites. The reader can see the difference between text from general to more specific information paragraphs.

Other features such as bold print, italics, title, heading, and subheading. Bold print and italics are used in the infographic parts. For example, “More than  2  million people volunteer to get involved in sports every week.  It’s a good way to get ahead!” This identifies the difference between important words or facts that the writer wants to use to induce the audience. For title, heading, and subheading use on the second page. For example, “SPORT & FITNESS” and “Exercise & Fitness: This is about helping people stay fit and healthy, and includes roles like a personal trainer, fitness instructor, yoga instructor, and swimming teacher.”  This also demonstrates how the writer organizes the text into groups which the audience can see and understand the analyzed details quickly.

Sidebars I found are in the bottom part of the second page. For example, the “useful link” section. This influences the reader to connect and contact the writer for more information later.

Illustration features mean pictures coaxing the reader. The feature I found is photos. For example, whistles and soccer balls are a signature of the leaflet because it shows the same theme as sports careers. Most sports coaches must have a whistle.  This convinces the reader to appreciate leaflet tactics.

Graphics feature means how the writer decides to use graphics to capture the audience’s attention. The feature includes diagrams, sketches, and figures. The various graphic features are well organized with flashy orange, white, and black color texts and diagram background. The blue color of the page background, the contrast color with the orange color of graphic boxes, is intentionally used for projecting the information.  This enhances the reader’s visual of a better understanding of sports careers.

Overall, Sport & Fitness sector Leaflet used various effective methods that illustrated that readers can understand the benefits and detailed information to attract the target audiences’ attention.

I would recommend this leaflet to everyone interested to join a sports career. The reason why I would recommend this leaflet is that it is easy to follow and apply all the qualifications needed. All in all, this leaflet is very effective to the audience because it illustrates the detailed information of the tips in an easy-to-understand way.  All of these AFORREST and Informational text techniques can be used in our group “What’s on Offer '' leaflet later on.
